Can capsicum plants be left in the garden to winter over?

Q.

Hi, can capsicum plants be left in the garden to winter over?

Shirley Warwick

A.

Hi Shirley

Capsicum don’t like the cold, and will survive for a while but will eventually die down. It is always better to plant fresh new plants each season as they will have more abundant fruit than the plant from last season. Try and collect the seed from one of the fruit for sowing next season. They may not come true to the parent plant as they are likely to be a hybrid, but worth a try.

Thanks, Tui Team.
