Can I plant kumara in the same ground I just started digging out my potatoes in?

  Auckland

Q.

Hi, can I plant kumara plants in the same ground that I just started digging out my potatoes in?

Guy Thorn

A.

Hi Guy

Best practice would be not to plant kumara in the same ground as potatoes were planted. They require the same nutrients to develop tubers, a soil rich in phosphorus along with a balance of other nutrients. If you're planting kumara in the same bed any plant debris from the previous crop can spread disease such as black rot or blight to your newly planted kumara. Kumara require a light free draining soil, they don’t thrive in heavy soils.

Thanks, Tui Team
