Can I plant saffron bulbs under my lemon tree?

  Wellington
  May

Q.

Hello, could I plant saffron bulbs under my lemon tree?

Maureen

A.

Hi Maureen

Saffron bulbs enjoy full sun, well drained soil and organic matter such as Tui Compost dug into the soil. Citrus trees have a very fibrous root system so we wouldn’t recommend planting under a lemon tree. They are unlikely to thrive in that situation.

If space is an issue, then plant them in pots using Tui Bulb Mix. They enjoy hot, dry summers, and tolerate frost. It is getting late now for planting crocus, they are usually planted in January or February and start flowering in May, depending upon the weather.

Thanks, Tui Team.
