Can I spray citrus in flower?

  Auckland
  October

Q.

Can I spray citrus trees when they are in flower?

Paul

A.

  • Best practice is to not spray flowering plants due to the risk to foraging bees and insects.
  • If spraying with a chemical insecticide such as pyrethrum, do not spray when bees are foraging. Once the spray is dry it is safe for bees.
  • Even when using organic natural botanical sprays, it is still best practice to not spray when bees are foraging.
  • Natural plant based botanical oil sprays are safer for beneficial insects but can still harm them if sprayed directly on to the insect.
  • If citrus are flowering and require spraying, do it either early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the bees aren’t foraging.
