Q.
Hi Tui, can kumara be grown in stony soil?
Carol Hudson
A.
Hi Carol,
Kumara are best grown in a light free draining soil rich in organic matter, rather than stony soil. If there is too much coarse material in the soil, the kumara will be misshapen and distorted. I suggest adding Tui Garden mix or Tui Vegetable mix to the soil. Do not cultivate the soil too deeply, digging it to a spade depth is good. If the soil it too deeply cultivated the kumara will grow down deep rather than at the soil surface. Please check out our Tui garden guide on growing kumara. https://tuigarden.co.nz/how-to-guide/kumara-growing-guide/. Regards, The Tui Team.
