Can peas be planted in autumn?

  Manawatu
  January

Q.

Hi, are there any pea varieties I could plant now or is it too late in the season? I have promised my granddaughter the next peas are all hers and she is hoping that will be this year :).

Hi Jenny, the best time to plant peas is in the cooler months, late winter (July) to early spring. You can plant peas in autumn once temperatures cool, as peas do not like heat. This will be a good experiment for your granddaughter to see which gives the best crop. Look for fast maturing varieties such as dwarf Massey peas, they mature in approximately 60 days and are suitable for autumn planting.
