Can you suggest a bushy and tall hedge option?

Q.

Hi, I would like to plant a hedge to screen my property from a busy road and the goods entrance to a supermarket (the lights from the trucks keep me awake). I like the idea of a feijoa hedge but bushiness and height are more important. It needs to grow two-three metres minimum to block lights. Could you please tell me what you suggest? Many thanks.

Hi Kay, pittosporum is a very fast growing NZ native. There are many different leaf shapes and colours, they grow to approximately 3 metres and are very hardy. They do like a trim every now and again to keep them bushy and encourage new growth.

A feijoa hedge may not grow as tall as you want it to and may not be dense enough in foliage to block the light. An alternative is Syzygium - Rose Apple tree, a very fast growing and hardy hedging tree.

  • Hi, I suggest the Griselinia Littoralis for a lush green hedge. We planted 30 plants 11 years ago to screen the Street and provide privacy from the neighbours, it requires clipping to maintain a nice looking hedge and its best to make a decision about how high you want them and when they reach that height clip the top or they tend to just keep on going up. They are a full, lush, beautiful green leaf and looks great... we planted a Buxus Hedge along the base to give different texture which worked well until Buxus Blight came along, we have almost saved it now. To balance the Griselinia, we have Butia Palms Psuedopanax, Colocasia and Clivia, with a beautiful Tetoki Tree we keep trimmed to a ball shape, all in all we love the colours, balance and privacy of our front garden, we planted White Camellia Hedge along the rear boundary, that took longer to reach the 7ft height, but is also a real joy.
