Q.
I have left my gladioli bulbs in the ground, is that okay or should I dig them up?

A.
It is best practise to dig up your gladioli (corms) bulbs in autumn; this is best done approximately six to eight weeks after flowering has finished in autumn.
- The main reason for lifting is cold, wet and soggy soil through winter along with heavy frosts causes the weaker bulbs to die out leaving the dominant colours to take over.
- By lifting gladioli, you ensure all bulbs survive winter and you will continue to get a range of colours in summer.
- Before plants die down and before lifting, spray with a copper-based spray as a protectant for fungal disease.
- Gladioli are also susceptible to thrips which can overwinter within the bulb. Remove all foliage before storing and dispose of in the rubbish, not in the compost, to prevent insect eggs overwintering.
- Once the plants are lifted, remove the foliage by cutting it off at the top of the bulb
- Store the bulbs in a paper bag or similar in the hot water cupboard for two weeks to dry out, this also prevents rot.
- Store in a cool dry place over winter so that the bulbs do not break dormancy early.
- Replant in spring (August).
