How can I deter cats from my garden?

Q.

Hi, what plant is the best to plant for cat repellent? They are using my garden to go toliet. Thanks, Kurnia.

A.

Hi Kurnia, this is a commonly asked question in the garden. See below top suggestions:

  • Try planting the following strong smelling plants: curry plant, lemon balm or pennyroyal - available at garden centres.
  • Cayenne pepper and chilli are two household products that cats don't like - sprinkle a little around plants in the bare patches.
  • Automatic sensor sprinklers are brilliant to, the movement triggers them to start.
  • Other gardeners have had success with sprinkling Tui Super Sheep Pellets on their garden and not digging them in - cats don't like the smell and won't use the area.

Garden centres also stock repellent products.

Generally cats are very territorial and creatures of habit, but they also hate going to the toilet in the same place for too long!

  • A friend put me onto plastic forks. Very cheap at the supermarket. Push them in handle first so only the prongs are showing, they will not squat (sorry for the wording) near them.

  • I use paprika all the time works really well

  • Achh those sticky smell-bombs are nasty. I used to break up twigs from any hedge trimmings and stick them in the ground. They only need to be a finger length or so above the ground and are a natural colour so barely noticeable once you step away from the bed. Cost free and your plants will soon grow up and hide them completely.

  • Short thorny rose prunings works a treat.

  • Orange peel works well. Just lay some around the area and it seems to keep them away.
