How do I get rid of lichen on my maple tree trunks?

  Bay of Plenty

Q.

Hi, I have two maple trees with lichen/patchy white spots that looks to be fungal, growing on the trunks, what do I use to get rid of this?

Hi Chris

There is a spray you can use called Lime Sulphur that is sprayed to deciduous trees only (when they are dormant and have lost their leaves in winter) that will remove lichen. Lichen does not do any harm to the tree, and in fact shows that the air around you is good clean air. You can do a few things to improve your air circulation around your trees. Thin them out and open up the canopy to improve air circulation and remove any dead wood. Only use Lime Sulphur if the tree is deciduous and dormant over winter.

Thanks, Tui Team
