How do I stop beetles eating my strawberries?

  Hawkes Bay
  November

Q.

I have found black or dark brown beetles (about a centimetre long) eating through my strawberries. What sort of beetle would it be and how do i stop it?

Malcolm Frost

A.

Hi Malcolm, it is hard to confirm which beetle it may be without a photo (feel free to send a photo to info@tuiproducts.co.nz). To deter the beetles try companion planting with chives or garlic (next winter) around your strawberries. Or consider spraying with a natural based insect killer, which will not harm the fruit.
