Q.
Hi Tui, how do you get figs to ripen? Also, how can I protect the tree from Wellington's gale force winds.
Glennis
A.
Hi Glennis, the figs will ripen over time in late summer, early autumn, they are ready to pick when they start changing colour, are slightly soft to touch and start shrivelling at the neck. Figs do not ripen once picked so it is important they are left on the tree to ripen. Stress on the tree will prevent the fruit from ripening, such as a lack of water, lack of fertiliser, pests and diseases or prevailing winds. Try and provide the best growing environment you can so that your figs ripen.
To protect the trees from wind, plant fast growing evergreen trees your local garden centre will be able to suggest trees that are suitable for your situation. Alternatively create a screen using trellis or wind break cloth. The Tui Team.
