Q.

How do you grow a courgette plant horizontally?

Philip Hornblow

A.

Hi Phillip, the purpose for growing courgette plants vertically as opposed to horizontally as a bush is to save space as plants become very space hungry and to help improve air circulation around the plant, also to prevent powdery mildew becoming a problem. Plants can be grown horizontally and will need a support structure as well as space to grow, they tend to grow horizontally anyway, creeping along the ground, a structure lifting them up will help improve air circulation and keep slugs and snails at bay. To grow courgettes vertically all you need is a support structure, bamboo stakes, garden stakes or tomato frames, anything that is suitable for tomatoes will be okay for courgettes. Keep tying the plant up as it grows. By growing vertically you can fit more plants into the garden bed.
