Q.
Hi, can you please give me any advice on transplanting feijoas? I have four Opal Star feijoa trees which get a bit dry in the summer and I'm keen to relocate them.
A.
Winter is a good time to move your feijoas. Prepare the new hole in advance by adding in some new compost and sheep pellets. Next dig out the feijoa by taking with it as much of the root ball as possible, then plant into the pre-prepared hole. Next, trim back about 20% of the foliage to compensate for the loss of roots and to limit leaf drop. This is a vital step. Give the tree a dose of Tui Organic Seaweed Plant Tonic to help prevent transplant shock.
Finally, apply a layer of mulch around the newly planted tree and keep moist. Stake the tree if it is in a windy area. It may not fruit next season, but should the following one.

How do you transplant feijoa trees? Comments
I am wanting to transplant feijoas that have only been in the ground 6 months. Your answer to a similar question says "now is the best time" but there is no date on the item. So when is the best month. It is now almost April. Thankyou
Winnie Foster
Hi Winnie, the best time is winter. Over the coldest months when most plants are not actively growing their metabolism slows right down, which means there is less chance of transplant shock when moving. This question was answered in June - we have updated the answer to be clearer. All the best, Tui Team.
