I have third year strawberries, should I trim the leaves?

  Waikato
  October

Q.

I have third season strawberry plants. Plants are flowering but leaves are growing above the flowers, should i trim (cut) the leaves as flowers getting no sunlight?

Arthur William Bone

A.

Hi Arthur, are the bees getting to the flowers? That is more important than the sunshine as the fruit will get bigger and eventually ripen. You don’t want to remove too much foliage. Although plants will fruit in their second and third year the fruit size is always smaller than plants first year of fruiting. Take runners off the plants and replant these for next seasons fruit. Happy strawberry growing!
