Our buxus leaves are yellowing, what should we do?

  Hawkes Bay

Q.

Hi, we have yellowing leaves on our buxus hedge. What product should we use to fix this. Regards.

Graham White

A.

Hi Graham, this yellowing is common coming out of winter into spring for buxus and caused by the change in seasons. A nitrogen rich fertiliser will help boost green foliage. Use either Tui Sheep pellets, Blood and Bone, Tui Seaweed & Fish liquid feed, Tui General fertiliser or Tui NovaTec premium fertiliser. Also beneficial to stimulate new growth would be to apply Tui Seaweed Plant Tonic to the buxus at 7 day intervals at a rate of 70ml per 9L watering can until the plant picks up, then continue with regular applications every 2-4 weeks for general plant health. Try and keep weeds and grass away from around the hedge as the plants will compete with the weeds for nutrients and water. Mulch around the trees to conserve soil moisture and regularly water throughout the growing season.

If the plant does not recover after fertilising and the foliage starts to die-back it could possibly be the start of Buxus Blight which is a disease that causes die-back in buxus and is prevalent in humid weather. Use clean tools to trim the hedge back as Buxus Blight can be spread by tools that have been used on other infected plants. I don't think it is Buxus Blight, but take a leaf sample into your local garden centre, they can also recommend a suitable control. The Tui Team.
