Should I cover my rhubarb crowns?

  West Coast
  June

Q.

Hi, in regards to Rhubarb, is it ok to cover the 'crowns' of the plant with soil or should they be left above the soil?

Brigitte

A.

Hi Brigette, it is best not to cover the crowns as this could cause the crown to rot, but do place generous quantities of organic matter around your plant as they do best in a soil that is enriched with organic matter such as compost, sheep pellets, chicken and sheep pellets or pea straw. Lianne
