Should I prune my fruit trees before moving them?

  Otago
  June

Q.

Hi, I have to move four fruit trees to a new spot, this will be their 3rd summer. Should I prune them before or after I shift them. Thanks.

Alan Reid

Hi Alan, it won't make too much difference if the trees are pruned first or after replanting, but they will certainly be easier to handle and move if you prune them first, and you are likely to cause less damage to the branches. Make sure the trees are pruned on a dry day using sharp tools so that the cuts are clean and the wood is not crushed which can lead to disease entering the tree. Lianne, Tui Team.
