What can I can put in raised garden over winter to improve the soil?

Q.

Hello, we are wanting to know is there anything you can pop in raised garden over winter when we are not growing veges, to make soil better for veges later?

LEE MCLINTOCK

A.

Hi Lee

Grow a green crop such as oats, blue or white lupin or mustard seeds. They need to be sown in autumn (now) and the plants cut down and dug into the soil around August. Once the plant material is dug into the soil it adds organic matter for the next crop and improves soil structure. Mustard has special properties to deter soil nematodes which nibble on plant roots.

Thanks, Tui Team.
