What do you recommend for white fly?

Hi Lindsay, you don’t say what plants the white fly are on and if it is flowering, or edible fruits or vegetable plants that are affected. Insecticides may not be suitable if you are growing edible crops so look for a natural alternative spray. White fly are sucking insects that are prevalent in spring, summer and autumn and are hard to control as they multiply rapidly. You need to break the life cycle. Use a horticultural spraying oil which is safe for edible crops, mix it with water and spray it on the plants, making sure the underside of the leaf is covered. Repeat sprays every 10-14 days. Consider planting companion plants that repel white fly such as nasturtium, marigolds and sweet basil. Keep garden plants actively growing during the growing season, well watered and fed plants naturally withstand insect pests. There is research that shows white fly were attracted to plants with certain nutrient deficiencies, they infest tomato crops that are deficient in magnesium and phosphorus. Mulch around plants with Tui Mulch & Feed to conserve soil moisture. If all else fails, get the hose out and blast the insects, keep doing that and eventually they go away. Lianne
