What fertiliser would you recommend for avocados?

  Northland
  September

Q.

Hi Tui, we have just planted avocados and read online they benefit from foliar feeding with a balanced liquid fertiliser that contains mixture of N, P, K. Which of your products would meet this criteria? Thank you for your help.

Cushla Baker

A.

Hi Cushla,

Regular feeding of young trees should be started after one year of growth. We would recommend Tui NovaTec Premium Fertiliser. Tui NovaTec Premium provides a sustained release of easy-to-absorb nitrogen, feeding your plants for up to four months.

In terms of a liquid fertiliser, Tui Seaweed & Fish Fertiliser would be a suitable option to encourage healthy plant growth, fruit and flower production.

Thanks, Tui Team

  • Hi, I wanted to know when is the best time to prune your avocado tree. Thanks.

    • Hi Peter, avocados do not generally need pruning every year, however, if the tree is getting too big and unmanageable, then prune in spring. Trees do respond to hard pruning to reduce their height, to keep a continuous supply of fruit, selectively prune the tree as they fruit on the new seasons growth, if you prune the whole tree, there will be no fruit until the following season.
