What is attacking my peaches and leaving holes?

Q.

Hello, last year something attacked my immature Golden Queen peaches. It left a hole in the fruit and the sap was outside the hole. What caused this and how can I stop it please? Kevin.

A.

That is a fruit worm caterpillar. It gets into the fruit and bores into the centre. Spray your tree in winter with copper and spraying oil to smother any overwintering larvae which hide in leaf nodes and under bark.

Pick up fallen fruit to prevent the caterpillar overwintering in the soil and dispose of fallen fruit. Spray in spring and summer with Tui Insect Eliminator or Tui Caterpillar Eliminator.

What is attacking my peaches and leaving holes? Comments

  • Why are my peaches dropping from the tree already before they are ripe?

  • Hi Honor, the most likely reason for this is brown rot or another similar fungus. These fungal problems over-winter in the bark and stems of the tree. Little can be done now, however we suggest you spray over winter with copper sprays to control. All the best ^Tui Team
