What is best to plant under fruit trees?

  Waikato
  April

Q.

Hello, what are the best things to plant under fruit trees? We have apples, plums, pears, mandarin, lemon and lime. We were thinking some nice ornamental grasses maybe? Thanks.

Suse Tidmarsh

A.

Hi Suse

The best thing to plant under fruit trees is anything that will attract bees to the garden for pollination. Grasses won’t attract bees but lavender, wild flowers, herbs such as rosemary, thyme, basil and oreganum will. Other flowers are echium, echinacea, borage (it can be a bit invasive) and nasturtiums.

Thanks, Tui Team.
