What is eating my rhubarb leaves?

  Auckland
  January

Q.

Hi, the leaves of my rhubarb plant are getting absolutely decimated and I cannot find the culprit. It does not appear to be attacking the stems. What is it?

Susan Reade

A.

Hi Susan, try going out at night with a torch and have a look around your plants, even through it is dry, slugs and snails are still active at night, or it could be a caterpillar that feeds at night. I believe this is slug and snail damage. Remove any bark or plant material from around the plant that may be a haven for slugs and snails and use a slug and snail control such as Tui Quash, it is a safer option to use around children and pets. If it is caterpillars, you can control them digitally if you can find them (with your fingers), they probably feed at night too. Could it be earwigs or beetles feeding on the leaves, they are likely hiding during the day under the pot and in the bark. Lift the pot to check. Talk to your local garden centre for a suitable insect control. Rhubarb likes cool moist roots and I would recommend increasing the watering as the mix looks very dry. The Tui Team.
