What pollinators do I need for an Omega plum?

  Auckland
  November

Q.

Hi Tui, I want to plant an Omega plum tree. Do I need a pollinator? Can I prune them to keep them to 6 ft or so? I just love them. I am in West Auckland.

Hi Margo, Omega plums are partially self fertile but fruit yield will be better if you have one of the following pollinators - Billington, Burbank, Duff’s Early Jewel, Elephant Heart, Santa Rosa, Sultan. Yes, the tree can be kept to a manageable size with regular pruning, prune to a vase shape so that the canopy is open for good air circulation, plums fruit on 1-3 year old wood so trim back new growth by approximately 20cm, prune in summer after fruit harvest to prevent disease affecting the tree. The Tui Team.
