Hiya, we are planting a Michelia figo hedge. I was hoping for some advice on what products to use while planting but couldn’t find a guide specific to hedges. I read the large tree planting one, shall I follow that or alter it slightly for hedging? Thanks!

Hi Ash, autumn is a great time to plant a hedge. A tree planting guide will help, but a few quick tips from Tui, work out your spacings, and how closely you want to space plants, generally trees are spaced half a metre to a metre apart, depending how dense you want the hedge to be. Dig your planting holes twice the diameter of the root ball. Mix into the planting hole either Tui Garden Mix or Tui Compost along with a handful of Tui Certified Organic Sheep Pellets. Before planting, dunk each plant, still in its pot or bag, into a bucket of seaweed solution until the bubbles stop. Remove plant from the bucket and drain. Remove the pot or bag, gently tease and loosen the root ball, drop the plant into the planting hole. Plant to the same soil level as the previous pot. Back fill, firm the soil around the plant using your heal. Water well after planting and continue regular watering, depending upon the weather, so that the trees become well established. I hope this is helpful planting information. Lianne
