What variety are pickling onions?

  Hawkes Bay
  May

Q.

Hi, what are the onions used for pickled onions called. I have been pickling onions today, and some of them have little green shoots. A friend told me not to use them, as they are poisonous. Have you heard of this? I have bottled them and hope for the best. To remove the green shoot would be silly as you would have a hole through the onion. Thanks.

Hi Marilyn, pickling onions are brown onions that are small and picked early or sown late, sow in November for harvesting in March. Sprouted onions are not poisonous. The only thing about using the pickling onions that have sprouted is that they may be soft and pulpy, and not hard like pickled onions should be. The Tui Team.
