Q.
Can you tell me what vegetables will grow in pots?
Sandrs
A.
- Most vegetables can be grown in pots as well as the garden.
- Use a quality free draining potting mix such as Tui Vegetable mix for the best results.
- Make sure any pot or container has drainage holes in the bottom and is large enough for the plants being grown and deep enough to hold enough potting mix or vegetable mix to provide moisture and nutrients for the plants to grow.
- You can grow brassicas (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage) in pots, look for the fast-maturing mini varieties and sprouting broccoli which can be picked as needed, you don't need to harvest the whole plant. The larger brassica varieties are also suitable, but take a lot longer to mature.
- All types of leafy lettuce are suitable, especially the loose leaf varieties that you can pick just the leaves rather than the hearting lettuce where the whole plant is harvested.
- Sow seeds of carrots into containers, make sure the container is approximately 30-50cm deep, otherwise the carrots will be stunted if the pot is not deep enough. Look for the small globe type carrots which don't have a long tap root.
- Beetroot is good in pots, the smaller leaves can be added to salads, as well as rocket and mizuna.
- Spinach and silverbeet are also suitable in pots although may go to seed in the warmer months so best grown in autumn and winter.
- In summer you can grow tomatoes, capsicum, chillies and egg plants in pots.
- Make sure the plants are consistently watered and apply weekly applications of Tui Superfood liquid fertilisers in the growing season.
