What would you suggest growing for privacy between mine and my neighbours property?

  Auckland
  August

Q.

Hi Tui, what would you suggest I grow for privacy between my neighbours and my property? The space is approx 9 meters long and I don't want anything that will require ongoing trimming.

Sue

A.

Hi Sue

It depends how high you want the hedge to grow, how wide it can spread and what the growing conditions are like. If you want something evergreen, some suggestions are Griselinia , phebalium, pseudopanx or five finger, ake ake or dodonaea, phormium or flax, and Thuja is a hardy upright conifer that holds its shape.

Thanks, Tui Team

  • On a similar note, we are looking to plant a fruit tree that will grow as quickly as possible to fill a corner and block out the new mansion next door overlooking our front yard. We are in East Auckland, north facing. Thanks.

    • Hi Greg, Guava, feijoa, blueberries, apple, mandarin, lemon, or grapefruit are all good options (don’t plant citrus that is grafted on to dwarf rootstock if you want a tall growing tree). Olive trees are also fast growing.
