Q.
How do I know when cucumbers are ready to be picked?
Gavin English
A.
Hi Gavin, it will depend which variety of cucumber is being grown, but as a rule of thumb, when they are the same size as the ones in the supermarket. The fruit should give slightly in your hand, but still be firm. If growing green cucumbers, once they start turning yellow they are past their best. If fruit is left too long on the vine there will be more pronounced seed and they could be bitter, cucumbers do not ripen off the vine, so pick the fruit when you think it is the right size for the variety being grown and go from there. You will get a feel for ripeness and your preference. Lianne.
