Hi Tui, for the first time ever, my pink hydrangea bush did not flower despite the leaves looking lush green and very healthy. It is pruned correctly as well as following the feeding guide. The ones in tubs flowered well. Any tips please.

Hi Diane, lush foliage suggests that there is too much nitrogen in the soil, this could be from the addition of nitrogen rich organic compost, sheep pellets or fertiliser. A balanced fertiliser is best, such as Tui General Garden fertiliser, feed in late winter, early spring as buds start to move. Flowering is helped by winter chilling, deadhead in autumn and then hard prune when the risk of frost has passed - the swollen plump buds are flower buds, the long slender buds are vegetative buds (foliage). In frost free regions prune your hydrangea to half its size in late autumn. Mulch around your hydrangea to keep the roots cool and moist and to add valuable organic matter back into the soil.
