Why have my lemons gone rotten on the bottom?

  Bay of Plenty
  May

Q.

My lemon is fruiting well, but some drop off with a light brown rot around the base and if left continue to rot. What could be causing this, and how can I prevent this?

Hans van der Heiden

A.

Hi Hans, that ring around the bottom of your fruit is called blossom end rot. It can be caused by inconsistent watering throughout the growing season, citrus need plenty of water in summer for flower and fruit development. It could also be caused by a nutrient deficiency of magnesium and calcium - an application of dolomite lime will help correct the nutrient deficiency or Epsom Salts will also help. Cut the end off, the fruit can still be used for juicing or cooking. Lianne
