Why is it not recommended to plant potatoes in the same place as last year?

  Bay of Plenty

Q.

Your advice not to plant spuds in the same place as last year, why is this? I have all ready generously fertilized last years plating patch.

Martin

A.

Hi Martin,

This is important if you have experienced pest or disease with your potatoes the previous year as they can overwinter in the soil. If you didn't, mix in some fresh compost and sheep pellets and add Tui Vegetable Mix to replenish nutrients. Avoid planting them where tomatoes have been planted the previous season, to reduce the risk of spreading any disease from the tomatoes.

Thanks, Tui Team
