Will Black Doris plums grow in the Central North Island?

  Manawatu
  November

Q.

Hi Tui, will Black Doris plums grow in the Central North Island at altitude? We live in Raurimu (at 580m) near National Park Village. Thanks.

Anne

A.

Hi Anne, yes plums will grow in cooler climates and at altitude as long as the summers are warm. Your Black Doris plum will require a pollinator to improve yield and the best pollinators for Black Doris plums are Billington, Santa Rosa and Duffs Early Jewel. Late frosts at the time of flowering will damage flowers and affect fruiting, Black Doris is a mid season fruiting tree so probably better suited to your region than early fruiting varieties which flower earlier and so are more at risk of frost damage.
