Q.
Can I grow a dwarf cherry tree in Auckland and will it fruit?

Hi, most cherry trees require a chilling period to fruit so are not suitable for warmer climates, there is a variety called Cherry Lapins that is suitable for warmer climates, this is a tall growing variety that would need trimming to keep compact. Alternatively, look out for a dwarf compact Stella cherry, they are grafted onto dwarf rootstock and grow to approximately 4 metres, Stella cherries require at least 30 days chilling to initiate fruit and depending upon where you are in Auckland, may get sufficient chilling.
