Following our call in the first June Tui Time newsletter for projects and tips to keep your fellow gardeners inspired over the cooler months, we received this pallet project from Gary, one of the Tui Time members.
Gary has created this herb garden based on a project he saw featured on Choice TV recently. It is made from a recycled pallet, painted with water based paint and planted out with a selection of herbs. It is anchored behind to the handrail on the ramp so there is no fear of it falling over. On the programme, they had it mounted it on a wall and were using it for a succulent display, but Gary was keen to create an edible pallet.
If you would like to try your hand at making a pallet garden here are some tips:
- Pallets can be lined with plastic, filled with a good, nutrient rich potting mix.
- Stand them on their edge vertically and use to plant salad crops and herbs.
- Alternatively they can be laid one on top of the other and used to place plants and pot crops on top of, to save bending over.
- Be aware that the timber isn’t treated so it won’t last more than a season or two, but they are generally free or cheap and looks effective, so well worth the effort.
