1. How you water your plants has a significant impact on how much water is absorbed by plant roots. Irrigation systems like soak hoses and dripper irrigation systems that water into soil, rather than onto plants, are the most efficient - they ensure plant roots grow deeper and are more resilient to dry conditions.
2. Water in the morning or evening to avoid water evaporation.
3. Take care to water the soil rather than the foliage, as this can spread disease.
4. A good deep soak every few days is better than shallow watering every day. This will encourage deep roots and help plants to better survive short term drought.
5. Check the moisture of your soil. If the soil is moist 10 centimeters below the surface it should be fine, if it is dry at this level it needs to be watered. In hot weather you may want to check the moisture every four to seven days.
6. Water the highest parts of the garden first, any run off will go to the lower dry areas.

Planting over the last few summer seasons has greatly improved and saved money using the very innovated plastic planting containers from the Warehouse and Bunnings at a very reasonable price of around $6.00 They are a square and approx. 6 x 6 inches x 4 inches deep with a 4 x 4 inch deep round hole in the center to take the plant. Tomatoes, peppers and anything that either grows up. Within the box is drain holes for a slow release water and around the internal planting section is 3 vertical tubes to accept the plastic coated growing stakes to support growing plants. The advantage and price justification is that 1. the weeds are kept out and 2. the plants are planted in the appropriate soil concentrated area. Water is quickly fed to the outer box for deep soaking and feeding without touching the leaves of the plant. Amazing results and less work!! ps. They are dark green thermo plastic.
