Can I grow fruit trees near walnut trees?

  Wellington
  April

Q.

Hello, can I grow feijoas near walnut trees? I know that walnuts are poisonous for many plants but not sure about feijoas.

Fran

A.

Hi Fran

Not many trees will grow in the shadow of another tree. You would need to plant the feijoas at least 2-4 metres way from the walnut tree. This is not because the walnut puts tannins in the soil which can affect growing, but because both trees will compete for nutrients and water, and the feijoa will be the loser.

Thanks, Tui Team.
