Can I plant the runners from my strawberry plants?

Q.

I have plenty of runners developed from last season's strawberry plants. Can I replant these now for next season, or is there some other way of keeping them over winter?

A.

  • You can plant the runners now into your strawberry bed.
  • They can be temporarily planted into a bed before planting out later, or plant them into pots to hold them over winter, ensuring they get watered in winter.
  • Strawberry planting time for commercial growers is May/June.
