Hi Tui, I have just bought Tui bulb food to fertilise my Hippeastrums however on the bag it says not suitable for pots and containers. I am confused, as it was recommended to me by the garden centre. It says 1/3 of a cup per square meter so how much to a large pot.

Hi Dot, best practice is to not use a blended fertiliser such as Tui Bulb food for plants in pots and containers, this is a disclaimer on all of our blended fertilisers. The reason for this is that there is no control mechanism with blended fertilisers and so a greater risk of over fertilising and burning plant roots. Soils act as buffer and if fertiliser is over applied, it disperses further out into the soil. When used in a pot, the fertilisers, which are essentially 'salts', accumulate at the pot wall and as concentration builds, it has the potential to burn plant roots. We recommend a controlled release fertiliser such as Tui Enrich Pots and Containers, or Tui Novatec which is a slow release fertiliser suitable for garden plants as well as pots and containers. Controlled release fertilisers release nutrients dependent upon temperature and moisture, it it is too cold, or too hot, the fertilisers do not release, this prevents a build up of salts and reduces the chance of roots burning in pots and containers. Controlled release fertilisers release nutrients for up to 6 months. Tui Novatec has nitrogen stabilising technology and an innovative way of releasing nutrients to plants as they grow, Novatec releases nutrients for 3-4 months. Blended fertilisers release nutrients for 6-8 weeks. The Tui Team.
