Hi Tui, can I use Tui Novatec Premium fertiliser and Tui liquid Seaweed plant tonic together on a new young avocado tree? The leaves are turnings brown at the ends and falling off. To date it has only had seaweed fertiliser. Thanks.

Yes, you can use both together as Seaweed Plant tonic is not a fertiliser, but a tonic, and Novatec is a great fertiliser for avocados, and is used commercially on orchards. The tree is planted in lawn and so is competing for nutrients and water with the grass, clear away a larger area of grass and apply mulch around the tree. Avocados are susceptible to a root rot disorder if the soil is not well drained, avocados do not like 'wet feet'. The best thing to do if you suspect the drainage is not good is to create a raised bed, this will improve drainage. Avocados also like a sheltered position away from prevailing winds, to get it established create a frame with wind break cloth around it to provide shelter. Apply seaweed plant tonic every 7 days at a rate of 70-100mls per 9L watering can. Novatec can be applied now and again in late summer, early autumn, you don't need a lot, only 60g (2 tablespoons) per square metre, so one tablespoon around your tree would be sufficient.
