Q.
Hi, does Rhubarb do well growing next to lemon trees? They both are gross feeders I understand. Thanks.

Hi Lucy, citrus and rhubarb will grow in the same area, both require a moisture retentive, well drained soil rich in organic matter. Citrus require a balanced fertiliser that contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium that is boosted with magnesium for healthy growth, fruiting and flowering. Rhubarb requires a fertiliser rich in nitrogen, as it is grown for its leaves and so flowering does not need to be promoted. A nitrogen rich fertiliser on citrus will give plenty of leave growth at the expense of flowering and fruiting. Feed both with sheep pellets, give your citrus a supplementary feed with Tui Citrus food to meet its flowering and fruiting requirements. If you make sure their fertiliser and water requirements are met, they will grow happily side by side, and rhubarb may even help keep white fly at bay. The Tui Team.
