How can I help my pawpaw tree fruit?

  Taranaki
  February

Q.

Hi, I have 2 pawpaw trees which are not fruiting. They are two years old. There is plenty of tiny fruits on them but they seem to fall off all the time. I live in Waitara Taranaki district. I have been fertilising them and taking extra care with them but I’m not having any success can you help?

Leonz

Hi Leonz, you will likely struggle to grow pawpaw in Taranaki unless you have a very warm frost free position, preferably with light sandy soils. They are tropical/subtropical fruit that require a constant temperature. We have seen them growing in Northland, however you might need a glass house in Taranaki. A Mountain pawpaw might be better as it tolerates cooler temperatures - look at the Incredible Edibles website for more information.
