How can I help my potted avocado plant? The leaves are looking deformed.

Q.

Hi Tui, I am having a problem with some of my potted avocado plants with the younger leaves looking very deformed. My reading indicates that this may be a calcium deficiency, and I see that gypsum may help. Your directions for use of your “Gypsum Clay Breaker” describe how to dig it into the soil - presumably before planting. How should I apply it to my potted 1-year old avocado plants? Can it be diluted in water and watered in? Thank you and kind regards Paul

Hi Paul, distorted leaves could be caused by a nutrient deficiency, but it could also be caused by other factors such as insect damage or sudden temperature changes. Insects such as mites can cause the leaves to pucker and avocadoes are susceptible to mites. Look on the underside of the leaf, they are minute spider-like insects that may cause the leaves to speckle or leave a dust on the underside of the leaf. Talk to your local garden centre about a suitable control.

Gypsum is best applied to the soil and watered in, it can be top-dressed and applied to the soil surface, it will depend how big your pots are as to how much you need to apply. It is not effective mixed with water, it needs to be mixed into the soil.
