How can you get blueberry plants to start fruiting?

  Bay of Plenty

Q.

How can you get blueberry plants to start fruiting? I've had the plant for almost a year now and nothing has come up

Saskia

A.

Hi Saskia, great question. Your fruit tree is still young so needs more time to establish. At two years, blueberries can flower and fruit but you don't want them to yet as they need time to establish first. Fruiting takes the plants energy away from root development and it goes into producing fruit. Ideally 3-4 year old plants will fruit. Crops will be sparse until the plants get more established. The wait will be worth it!

Once established, feed blueberries planted in garden beds in spring and summer with Tui Citrus Food, it has extra potassium for flowering and fruiting. For blueberries in pots and containers use Tui NovaTec Premium fertiliser. Read our full Blueberry Growing Guide.
