Q.
Is there a way to increase the size of the flowers on my new Tulips?
Bill Cossill
A.
- Chilling is the secret to tulip flowering success as they are a cool climate bulb. The colder the winters, the better the flowering.
- In warmer regions of New Zealand bury the bulb a bit deeper or lift the bulbs once they have finished flowering store them in a cool dry place through summer and 6-8 weeks before planting in autumn place them in the fridge for chilling to initiate flowers. Don't store them with apples in the fridge as they emit ethylene gas which inhibits flower initiation.
- It isn't possible to change the size of the flowers in the current season as the bulbs will have already gone through a chilling process.
- Feed your bulbs with Tui Bulb Food when the first leaves and flowers appear and again when flowering has finished. Tui Bulb Food contains potassium which enhances flowering.
