Q.
Hi Tui, I have been given a small quantity of Kowhai seeds to grow for a friend. The seeds came from a property that was a family home, just sold, so has sentimental value. When is the right time to sow the seeds? Do I follow the instructions given this week for vegetable seeds, or is there a different method for native trees?

Hi Valarie
Kowhai seed has a thick outside “shell”. The seed needs to be scarified to break the dormancy before sowing. This involves chipping the seed with a knife (don’t chip too deep or you will damage the embryo) or rubbing the seed on sandpaper so that water can enter the seed. The seed coating doesn’t need to be completely removed, it just needs a nick so that water can enter the seed.
Spring (now) is a good time to sow kowhai seeds, follow our growing from seed guide for tips on doing this.
Thanks, Tui Team.

How do I sow Kowhai seeds? Comments
I have just done an experiment. I saw some kowhai trees growing alongside the pathway on my covid19 walks down past the Hutt river. I inspected them closer to find they had last years seed pod still attached. These I collected and I planted some seed unchipped. Then 3 weeks later I planted some chipped seed. The difference between germination was exactly 3 weeks as the seedlings all sprouted at the same time... So, take your pick...
