How do I stop a small brown beetle feeding on my cabbages?

  Canterbury
  December

Q.

Hi Tui, I have a small 1cm brown beetle that comes out at night and is eating the leaves on my cabbages. What might it be and how do I control it please?

Stewart Shadbolt

A.

Hi Stewart, that is called a bronze beetle and it is attracted to light, if you have solar lights in the garden or lights in that area of the garden, move them or turn them off at night. Beetles are hard to control in the adult stage and a lot of sprays are not effective because they have a hard "shell". Ask at your local garden centre or DIY store for a suitable control, you could try Diatomaceous Earth, which is a natural silica product that is sprinkled on the soil surface and is like walking over cut glass for slugs, snails and other insect pests.
