How much should I water my potted lemon tree over winter?

  Marlborough
  June

Q.

Hi Tui, I have a new Meyer Lemon tree in a pot and it is flowering. I intend planting it in the spring once frosts are over. How much should I water it over winter? I live in Marlborough.

Hi Diane

It depends how often it rains. It has a pea straw mulch around the tree so that will help conserve soil moisture. Generally in winter water once a week, or twice a week if it hasn’t rained. Push your index finger into the potting mix and if it feels damp then you don’t need to water, if it feels dry, water.

Thanks, Tui Team
