I have bugs on my beans and other plants, what can I do?

Q.

Hi, I have a problem with weevils on my beans and other plants, can you help with getting rid of them please. Thanks.

Leonz

A.

Hi Leonz, without a positive ID or photo to go off, these are likely to be green vegetable bugs, when you touch them they give off an awful smell. Ask at your local garden centre or DIY store for a suitable control, a pyrethrum based insecticide will work and has a very short withholding period, this is the amount of time you leave crops before eating after being sprayed. Repeat applications will be required. Alternatively hosing off the beetles with water is effective, make sure weeds are kept down as they can be host to green vegetable bug and other insect pests. If it is beetles or weevils then the treatment would be the same. Keep your garden well watered, fed and apply Seaweed Plant Tonic to stimulate growth and make plants more resistant to pest and disease attack. The Tui Team.
